What is Etsy Made in Canada?

Etsy: Made in Canada is a national grassroots initiative celebrating makers in local communities across Canada. Organized by local Etsy sellers and supported by like-minded partners Etsy: Made in Canada marketplaces will be popping up nationwide from the Yukon to Newfoundland on September 23, 2017. These unique community run markets give Etsy sellers the opportunity to sell their goods to local buyers in markets that represent the spirit of their community and let neighbours discover the wealth of creativity and craftsmanship in their own backyards.

Who runs EMIC Halifax?

Organized by volunteers Fatema Sidat and Jessika Hepburn with help from Maritime Makers and Nova Scotia’s Etsy sellers the first EMIC market in Halifax was held at the Forum with 60+ vendors in 2014, our 2015 market drew nearly 15,000 people to Citadel Hill, and in 2016 we fit over 100 makers into 4500 square feet. Now in our fourth year our market is moving to our biggest venue yet, the 45,000 square foot Cunard Centre to celebrate the creative resilience of the Nova Scotia economy and inspire our community with the chance to know and support their local creative entrepreneurs.

Etsy does not organize our markets, volunteer organizers and Etsy sellers in Canadian communities put on their own events with some help from Etsy in the form of a bursary, training summit for team captains, plus ongoing coaching, resources, and support. It is up to volunteers in each community to decide how they will run their markets and represent their creative community.

  • Booth: $150 for a 10 x 10 space
  • Corner or entrance placement: Additional $100 (limited availability)
  • Table Rental: 2 x 8 Banquet table $40 
  • Chair Rental: $10
  • Electricity: $60 (duplex outlet, must bring your own extension cords)
  • WiFi: $10 per vendor
  • Parking: Free

Payment is due online within 10 days of acceptance letter – please check your junk mail folder just incase you miss the email. If your shop is not approved this year our team will let you know – gently, because we think you are awesome but can’t fit every one!

Vendor Eligibility

Etsy sellers of handmade, vintage, and supplies in Nova Scotia with an active Etsy shop are eligible to apply.

Our events value diversity, inclusion, culture, and community – we encourage all our visibly diverse, minority, senior, student and parent makers of all abilities to apply or reach out for help when submitting their applications so we can support you. 

What can I sell?

Handmade items made or designed by you, vintage items 20+ years old, or craft supplies that follow Etsy seller policies.

Jurying & Acceptance

Jurying is done on a point system by our volunteer organizing team with the intention of creating a diverse selection of products and businesses who represent our creative economy and making opportunities available to new makers. Submissions are judged based on quality of online shop and products, market readiness, willingness to volunteer, and overall strength of application. Team captains Fatema and Jessika are responsible for final selections from the jury short list. Acceptance letters are sent out via email between June 1-8, please add to your address books or check your spam filter to make sure you receive them.

Culture & Community 

Fifteen 2×8 tables are available free of charge to cultural and community groups who are invited to participate and help us represent the diversity of our creative economy. If you are a community or cultural group in Nova Scotia you are eligible – click here to apply. 

Sponsors & Supporters 

Fifteen 10 x 10 spaces are reserved to showcase supporters of the creative economy including retail shops, services, and supplies. These spaces are $500 for the booth and inclusion in our gift bags, or become an event supporter for $1000 and recieve placement of supporter logos on marketing and promotional materials, inclusion in social media campaigns, gift bags, and prominent event presence. Gift bags & door prizes

Every year line-ups circle the block for a chance to get a gift bag full of small items from our vendors. Accepted vendors and sponsors invited to contribute 50 items such as pins, testers, promotional coupons, gift cards, or small items. A number of bags will be reserved for media and influencer promotions. Optionally you can contribute a door prize valued at $20 or more. Door prizes & gift bag items must be received no later than September 17.


Etsy Made in Canada Halifax is an entirely volunteer run event organized by local team leaders. Priority is given to vendors willing to participate in creating this community driven event, any amount of time you can contribute counts! Community members can also volunteer by emailing

Do I have to make everything by hand? What is your manufacturing policy?

We realize that many makers work with partners such as printers, designers, and small batch manufacturers to produce their work and we encourage businesses to grow ethically while supporting other small producers. We do require all items be the creative work of one artist, or artists in the case of a partnership, and that manufacturing relationships be disclosed transparently. As our focus is on developing our regional capacity makers who work with regional or local manufacturers and suppliers will be prioritized. 

If you work with an outside manufacturer please include this information on your application if it is not already disclosed on your Etsy shop.  

What are my responsibilities as a vendor?

We will provide all vendors with a marketing package and timeline prior to July 1st and ask for help sharing in the months leading up to the event.  The complete terms and responsibilities for vendors are laid out in our vendor contract that must be signed and returned with payment before your space is reserved. 

Vendor cancellation policy

If you cancel before July 1 and we are able to secure a replacement from the waiting list, you will be refunded 50% of your booth fee. After July 1, no refunds will be given.


Last year our venue was 4500 square feet and this year it is 45,000! A converted waterfront cargo shed, the Cunard Centre/Pier 23 is one of Halifax’s largest venues with capacity for up to 4000 people at one time. This is an expensive venue which imposes some limitations if we are going to offer an event that is financially accessible to our community. The biggest limitation is there will be little set up and tear down time so pipe and drape will not be available. Vendors will have two hours to load in and set up in the morning from 7am-9am and two hours to tear down in the evening from 7-9pm. 

Load in and set up begins at 7am sharp, vendors not onsite by 8am will not be permitted to set up unless otherwise arranged in advance. Doors open at 10am, vendors must be ready to open to public by 9:00am when VIP, press, and giveaway winners can enter. Tear down begins at 7pm and vendors must be offsite by 9pm. 

You are required to submit a description of your booth set up with your application and what your set up needs are (Do you want to bring a couch? Free standing displays? Special lighting? Let us know so we can plan for it!)   

Pro Tip: Tables & chairs are available for rent but building your own booth displays is always a good idea so you can practice set up and take down in advance of the event. We’ve collected an inspiration board of ideas and resources to help you with booth design, check it out here!
